continues to support the Government of Sudan to develop the capacity of
human rights

14 June, 2012: As part of UNDP’s support to the Government of Sudan
in the area of promoting human rights protection, the Advisory Council
for Human Rights organized Thursday 14 June, a high level forum for developing
capacities of human rights in Sudan- which coincided with the visit of
the Independent Expert for Human Rights, Massaoud Badareen,
The Forum was addressed by the Resident Humanitarian Coordinator and UNDP
Resident Representative Mr. Ali AL-Zata’ri, Mr. Massaoud Badreen,
Justice Minister Mohammed Bushara Dossa, Deputy Undersecretary of the
Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Mahmoud Fadul Abdelrasoul and
the Rapporteur of the Advisory Council on Human Rights, Mr. Muaz Tango.
In his opening address, AL-Zata’ri referred to the positive approach
adopted by all UN organizations in their constructive dealing with the
Government of Sudan in its different fields of work which intersect positively
with human rights to make justice a reality. AL-Zata’ri, furthermore,
touched on the various supports UNDP extends to the Government of Sudan.
“UNDP
is working with the Ministry of Justice in the spheres of promoting justice,
rule of law and on activities related to raising legal awareness about
human rights and the Sudanese laws, legal aid delivery, legislation reforms
and development of capacity of the judicial, police and prison organs
with a view to enhancing the ability to apply law”, AL-Zata’ri
affirmed.
AL-Zata’ri added that these efforts “Contribute directly and
indirectly to boosting the efforts exerted by Massaoud Badreen, Sudan
Government and civil society organizations staff to further boost human
rights.
The Independent Expert for Human Rights on Sudan, Mr. Massaoud Badreen,
voiced his interest in extending technical support to the Government of
Sudan as well as acting as a focal point between the international community
and the government of Sudan.
