Sudan Launches National SDGs Media Campaign

Aug 20, 2016, Khartoum - With the presence of the State Minister of Welfare and Social Security, the Secretary General of the national Population Council (NPC), and the United Nations Resident Representative. The Minister of Information launched the National SDGs Media Campaign.

The event took place at the Grand Holiday Villa on August 20, 2016 with strong representation from various government entities, civil society and international partners.

The Minister of Information - Mr. Ahmed Bilal Osman announced that his ministry will avail all resources and support the implementation of the National SDGs Media Campaign.

The Secretary General of the NPC Dr. Limiaa Abdel-Ghaffar, emphasized the importance of the SDGs in achieving the Sudan We Aim For by 2030 by mainstreaming the National SDGs programme in the National Quarter Century Plan (2007 – 2030).

Ms. Wisal Hussein - the Assistant Secretary of the NPC, showcased the efforts of the government of Sudan and of the National Population Council in the consultations that led to the endorsement of SDGs, and Sudan’s success in adding article 30 of “Transforming Our world” document concerning unilateral economic, financial or trade measures not in Accordance with international law and the Charter of the United Nations.

Ms. Wisal also highlighted the national efforts in including different stakeholders from the ministerial and state levels, civil society and private sector partners in the consultations to determine Sudan’s national developmental priorities. She stressed the importance of Media in the upcoming stage of advocating SDGs in Sudan, revealing plans to start the “Journalists for Sustainable Development” network.

Dr. Limiaa underscored Sudan’s commitment to achieving the SDGs by creating and developing the capacities of entities responsible for monitoring and achieving SDGs and also Creating the “National Mechanism to Oversee the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goals” chaired by the Vise President of the Republic.

Dr. Limiaa also highlighted the importance of partnerships in achieving the SDGs, stating that “Sudan is working on strengthening partnerships and cooperation with UN agencies and International Organizations to support peace and development efforts in Sudan and to achieve SDGs.”

From her side, the UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative Ms. Marta Ruedas praised the demonstration of commitment by the government of Sudan to raise public awareness about SDGs. Renewing The united Nations commitment to support the Government of Sudan in its efforts to the SDGs, highlighting UNDP’s role at the core of these efforts in working with national partners on reporting on the MDGs, it will be able to launch the report on MDGs soon and that will give us a good bases on planning on the SDGs.  Stating that “As the United Nations, we are at the center of the discussion but we are not leading here, we will support every effort of the government and society here to achieve the SDGs. UNDP will be bringing a mission later this year to work on exactly how we can accelerate implementation of SDGs and ensure that they are mainstreamed throughout all of the activities of the United Nations”.
