Promoting the Rule of Law and Access to Justice in SudanApr 24, 2016
April 24, 2016, Khartoum – The United Nations in Sudan in collaboration with Ministry of Justice held donors’ Conference on Promoting Rule of Law and Access to Justice under the Global Focal Point settings at Al Salam Rotana today. The conference was attended by key partners from the UN system, national government and international community.
The aim of the conference was to raise the financial resources required to enable the United Nations organizations and partners to promote reforms in the justice system in Darfur; and facilitate a sustainable handover of specific tasks to the United Nations team in Sudan.
The Conference confirmed that the issues on the UN agenda were timely and contemporary, and provided good basis for UN agencies and national partners to continue work in the area of Rule of Law and Access to Justice in Sudan, especially in Darfur.
The Joint Programme on Rule of Law, Human Rights Community Security Reform developed by UNDP together with UNAMID and other UN agencies, aims at pulling-in all relevant agencies working on Rule of Law to create better synergies and to maximize resources.
The partnership between UN agencies and Government was recognized by Ms. Marta Ruedas, UN Resident Humanitarian Coordinator/UNDP Resident Representative in Sudan and Dr. Awad Al Hassan Alnoor, Minister of Justice leading the improvement of justice system in Sudan.
The United Nations Development Programme Country Director, Mr. Selva Ramachandran, has stated that there is an urgent need for rights-based c development capacities of rule of law and human rights institutions. Joint Rule of Law Programme thus will pursue strategic interventions to strengthen equitable and timely access to justice and promote the rule of law, while sustaining community-based access to justice programming to meet the needs of those who are in need..
Ms. Marta Ruedas, UN Resident Humanitarian Coordinator/UNDP Resident Representative in Sudan called on international community to support turn good intentions into action, and invest in Joint Programme to promote the rule of law and access to justice through the Global Focal Point Initiative.
