Supporting Human Rights Mechanisms in Darfur
UNDP in Collaboration with the National Human Rights Commission organized a two day Consultative workshop on the establishing of Human Rights sub offices for the Human Rights Commission in Darfur.
Minister of Justice H.E. Awad Hassan Al-Nour addressed the opening ceremony of the workshop where he reiterated the government’s commitment to render all the necessary support needed for the commission to conduct its activities in the different states , in particular in post affected areas such as Darfur. The Minister further commended the role of #UNDP in supporting the National Human Rights Commission in its efforts to establish sub-offices in Darfur in addition to reviving previous proposals on the formation of the Darfur Human Rights Forum. d of the UNDP Rule of Law Unit, Surayo Buzurukova stated that “The main objective of this event is to create a platform for exchanging views, ideas and experiences and best practices in different areas of human rights in Sudan. This is an important event for UNDP as we rarely get a chance to listen to the views of civil society and other institutions.” She further added that “ The workshop will provide an opportunity for deliberating on the status of human rights , areas where progress is made , and emerging threats were identified, in addition to discussing the way forward on how to nurture a culture of human rights’ observance in #Sudan
Dr. Ali Suliman of the Council of States also addressed the opening ceremony where he stated that in his capacity as a member to the legislative council which monitors the government’s performance with regards to human rights “ It is important to work hand in hand with both national and international partners to strategize on ways to enhance the human rights in Sudan. “Various representatives from Sudanese civil society organizations and national and international organizations such as the Arab League represented by Dr. Tamer Suliman.
