Workshop on “Investment Promotion” for Government ExecutivesFeb 18, 2014
The National Investment Authority, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), have opened on 17 February 2014, a four-day training workshop on “Investment Promotion” for government executives in Corinthia Hotel Khartoum.
The workshop is carried out as part of the activities of the UNDP project of “Enhancement of Investment Climate for Employment Generation”. The project supports the efforts of Government of Sudan to improve employment opportunities through enhancing investment climate, which will be able to attract investment opportunities to generate more employment. In this respect, the project aims to support the capacities within the National Investment Authority (NIA) and the states investment commissions, to facilitate the creation of enhanced investment climate.
In his opening remarks, the Head of Poverty Reduction and MDGs Unit Mr. Ahmed Elhag described the workshop as very important and in line with the efforts currently exerted by the government of Sudan, to enhance the role of investment in furthering the national economy. Mr. Elhag stated that the steps taken are hoped to stimulate economic growth in an inclusive manner benefiting all sectors of the Sudanese society and help reduce poverty in the country. He added that the UNDP and the National Investment Authority have identified certain priority areas of cooperation to support enhancing investment climate in Sudan including advocacy for policy reform and capacity development for investment promotion. He added that the workshop is designed to target participants from various government departments concerned with investment promotion to contribute to the process of developing the national capacities for investment promotion within the eminent government institutions.
In her opening remarks, the Director of External Relations in the National Investment Authority Ms. Hanan Musnad stated that “in the context of cooperation between the Government of Sudan and the UNDP, His Excellency Dr. Mustafa Osman, Minister of Investment and Mr. Ali Al-Za’tari, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator and the UNDP Resident Representative – Sudan agreed that the UNDP would provide support to the national efforts to develop investment in Sudan. Ms. Hanan stated that the workshop is a kick off for the UNDP support to investment project”.
The training workshop is delivered by two senior international experts; Mr. Babar Kamal, Manager of Public Finance and Trade Programme in the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and Dr. El Hadji Abdourahmane Diouf, the Executive Director of African Agency for Trade and Development (2ATD). In his opening remarks, Mr. Babar Kamal stated that UNITAR has been training leaders from all parts of the globe on international affairs and social and economic development for over fifty years. Commending UNDP-UNITAR partnership, Mr Babar stated that the workshop “provides a practical example of making use of existing synergies within the UN system with a view to “Deliver as one” to better serve the needs of member states”.
